In an effort to encourage responsible gun ownership, the Jackson Police Department is providing free gun locks to the Jackson community. The gun locks are made available through Project ChildSafe, a program of the National Shooting Sports Foundation to promote firearms safety and education.
The police department currently has 100 gun locks to distribute. The locks are a cable style lock that secures the firearm by running a cable through the action of the firearm and locking it with a key. Chief Elmer Hitt hopes having more locks out in the community will help deter theft of weapons or guns getting into the hands of children. “Responsible gun ownership includes proper storage in order to prevent accidents, theft, and misuse. We hope this will make an impact in gun safety in our community,” Chief Hitt said.
The locks are available at the Jackson Police Department, which is located at 216 E. Washington Ave. Front lobby hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
