Water main construction closes N. Blackstone Street in Downtown Jackson

Blackstone closed

The City of Jackson has started a construction project to replace the water main on N. Blackstone Street between Louis Glick Highway and Van Buren Street. In the past summer, deficiencies in the water mains at the intersection of Glick and Blackstone were discovered. This City is pushing a project forward on an expedited schedule to get the repairs completed before inclement weather arrives in late November. This project is being funded by City Water Funds. There will be no cost to the property owners for this work.

The primary purpose of this project is to replace the water main on Blackstone between Glick and Van Buren. This will include the water mains within the intersection of Blackstone and Glick. The pavement along the west side of Blackstone will be removed for the installation of the new water main pipe and then restored with new hot mix asphalt. A portion of the concrete pavement at the intersection of Blackstone and Glick will also be removed and replaced by construction.

Work is scheduled to be completed in early November 2021. While under construction, Blackstone Street will be closed to through traffic but will remain open to local traffic so that driveways within the work zone will remain accessible for residents and patrons. Driveways will remain accessible at most times throughout the construction period. The exceptions will be when pipe is installed in front of properties, concrete is placed and cured for the new curb, sidewalks and driveways, and when the street is paved with new asphalt.

A single lane on Glick Highway will remain open for westbound traffic throughout the construction period. Eastbound traffic will directed along a Washington Avenue to Cooper Street to Michigan Avenue route. This will be the same route that was used for eastbound traffic prior to the 2017 conversion of Glick and Washington to two‐ way traffic.
