Here are highlights from the March 8, 2022 meeting of the Jackson City Council:
-Construction is coming to Greenwood Avenue this summer. The City Council voted to approve special assessments to partially fund the construction project, which will resurface Greenwood from Morrell to Griswold streets. The majority of the project is being funded using federal and City funds. The roadway is currently more than 30 years old and is in a deteriorating condition. Construction is set to begin in July.
-A new affordable housing development is planned in Jackson. The City Council approved the sale of two vacant City-owned lots on W. Wilkins Street for a 51-unit apartment complex named The Greenwood. This apartment development will take shape on vacant lots located on Greenwood Avenue in a neighborhood south of Downtown Jackson. Rents will be offered based on income so the units are affordable for young professionals, the local workforce, and families. Further property sales and approvals are needed before The Greenwood development continues to move forward. It’s expected to bring a $13 million investment to the community.
-Changes are coming to the City’s ward boundaries. The City Council approved an initial plan to alter ward and precinct lines. The changes are required by the City Charter every 10 years to comply with the latest U.S. Census data and Jackson County Commission boundaries. A final vote on the changes is happening at the March 22 meeting.
-Railroad bridges over N. Mechanic and N. Jackson streets are getting replaced by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) this year. The City Council approved contacts with MDOT to perform the work in the City. Construction starts later this month.
-Another marijuana business could be coming to Jackson. The City Council approved a facility license for a proposed business on E. South Street.
-Several summer events were approved by the City Council, such as Food Truck Tuesdays, Friday Film Nights, Relay for Life, and the Art, Beer and Wine Festival.
