Jackson’s Fifth Ward is one step closer to getting a new City Council representative. The Jackson City Council has organized a special meeting on Monday, Nov. 27 at 1 p.m. to interview candidates for the vacant Fifth Ward seat.
The seat was vacated in Sept. upon the resignation of former City Councilmember Karen Bunnell. According to the City Charter, the City Council is to appoint a resident to the position within 60 days of a resignation, with the appointee serving until an election can be held to fill the seat. The application period for this position closed on Nov. 3.
The following candidates have been contacted to be interviewed by the City Council:
- Christy Davis
- Shalanda Hunt
- Sam Kloos
- Anson Lah
- Todd Moore
- Robert Porter
- Holly Rose
- James Warner
- Tonja Worthey
The interviews will take place in alphabetical order. The City Council has until Nov. 29 to appoint a new Ward 5 councilmember and will make a decision following the interviews. The appointed resident will hold the position until elections are held to fill the seat in Aug. 2024 (Primary Election) and Nov. 2024 (General Election). The winner of the General Election will complete the rest of the seat’s original term, which ends in Dec. 2025.
The special meeting will take place in the 2nd Floor City Council Chambers of City Hall, 161 W. Michigan Ave. The Fifth Ward is made up of the western half of Downtown Jackson and several residential neighborhoods surrounding downtown.
