UPDATE: The fire at a vacant commercial property on W. North Street is contained. Fire crews will remain on the scene to monitor. W. North Street between Cooper Street and N. Blackstone Street will be CLOSED to traffic until further notice.
Residents are still advised to stay away from the area. If you're in the immediate area and have concerns about air quality, you should shut your windows and turn off air conditioning.
The fire department is checking air quality in the
City of Jackson and have not found any immediate health impacts. The air quality will continue to be monitored.
Every fire department in Jackson County responded to the fire. Three City of Jackson firefighters and one Napoleon Township firefighter were treated on the scene for heat exhaustion.
Michigan State Police have been called in to investigate and the Environmental Protection Agency has been advised to monitor any environmental impacts.
