The City of Jackson has an update on parking in Downtown Jackson. At a special meeting on Wednesday, March 26, the Jackson City Council voted to officially reverse their prior decision to install parking meters in the downtown area. Parking meters were proposed to cover the cost of parking maintenance and enforcement. Businesses located downtown have been covering those costs through special assessments.
At the meeting, the City Manager was directed by the City Council to create a task force to come up with funding alternatives to parking meters. Alternatives will be presented to the City Council at a meeting in the coming months.
Free parking with time limitations continues for vehicles placed along streets and in select lots. An interactive map displays where free parking is available downtown and which lots require permits.
