[ARCHIVED] Jackson City Council Aug. 11 Meeting

8-11-20 meeting

Here are highlights from the Aug. 11 virtual meeting of the Jackson City Council:

The City Council unanimously approved the appointment of Jonathan Greene to the City Manager position. He had been serving as the Interim City Manager since Feb. Greene has worked for the City of Jackson over the past decade, most recently as the Public Works Director.

The council unanimously approved two racial equity efforts on their first readings. They include creating a City Department of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, along with establishing a Racial Equity Commission in the City of Jackson. Both efforts need to be voted on a second time before being officially adopted.

The council considered several special assessments for road repair projects. Assessments on Wellworth Street, Third Street, and Washington were all voted down. An assessment for Clinton Street was approved.

The council approved the renewal of the special assessment that allows the Meterless Parking System to continue in Downtown Jackson for another year.

A hearing was held for the MLK Corridor Improvement Authority. It will be given official consideration at a meeting in Oct.

The council approved the second reading of an ordinance that alters how special assessments are performed. If a majority of residents who are being assessed object to the project, six out of seven councilmembers will have to vote in favor of the project in order for it to go forward.
