A Snow Emergency has been declared for the City of Jackson because of a major snow storm hitting the area. The Snow Emergency will be in effect from Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 12 a.m. to Saturday, Feb. 5 at 12:00 p.m.
During these times, the City is instructing residents to remove parked vehicles from streets and refrain from parking along street curbs so road crews can effectively clear snow from streets. Residents without a place to park vehicles may use the Consumers Energy Headquarters parking garages for free during the duration of the snow emergency. The garages are located off S. MLK Drive and S. Cooper Street in Downtown Jackson. Drivers are asked to park between floors 2 and 4 in both garages.
According to the City’s Snow Emergency Alert Ordinance, a vehicle will be towed at the owner’s expense if it prevents the passage of a City salt/plow truck that’s attempting to clear a street. The vehicle owner will also be given a $100 civil infraction fine. The ordinance allows the City Manager to declare a Snow Emergency to assist in street clearing efforts, which are essential to the health and safety of residents during a major snow event.
It’s important for residents to know that during winter weather events, crews from the Department of Public Works (DPW) target major roads and emergency snow routes first and then get to neighborhood streets. The DPW will have 10 salt/plow trucks running throughout the emergency period to stay on top of street conditions, along with using smaller vehicles to clear downtown parking lots and short dead-end streets. Any changes to the emergency order, such as an extension or early ending, will be announced on the City’s website and social media platforms. The City appreciates the assistance of residents in helping keep Jackson safe during this snow emergency.
