Here are highlights of what happened at the Aug. 9, 2022 meeting of the Jackson City Council meeting.
-The MLK Corridor Improvement Authority (also called MLKCIA) was a main topic of discussion at the meeting. In two different measures, the City Council voted to expand the borders of the authority to include more of the south side neighborhood and to allocate $4.5 million in federal funds for commercial redevelopment and small business assistance in the authority district. The MLKCIA is mainly focused on the entirety of Prospect Street and S. MLK Drive.
-A neighborhood street on Jackson’s northeast side is getting a construction project next year. The City Council approved a water main replacement and street resurfacing project for Blakely Street between Elm Avenue and Pleasant Street.
-Several community events were approved by the City Council, including the Hispanic Heritage Festival, Grand River Cleanup and Bright Walls Mural Festival.
-A $10 million loan from the State of Michigan will be used by the City of Jackson to upgrade the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The City Council approved the low-interest loan from the State to upgrade this important infrastructure.
-A $1.1 million improvement is coming to the Water Treatment Plant. The City Council allocated American Rescue Plan funds for maintenance at the plant.
