Here are highlights of what happened at the Tuesday, Oct. 11 meeting of the Jackson City Council:

  • A neighborhood street on Jackson’s east side will be seeing major improvements next year. The City Council approved a $1.2 million water main, lead line replacement, and street resurfacing project for N. Perrine Street from E. Michigan Avenue to Burr Street. This five-block section has a water main that’s nearly 100 years old. The street surface is 40 years old and is rapidly deteriorating. The majority of the project will be funded by federal funds.
  • More improvements are coming to two parks and one pedestrian trail. The City Council approved upgrades for Optimist Park and Loomis Park, along with accepting funds from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to resurface the MLK Equality Trail from W. Prospect Street to S. West Avenue.
  • The City Council set Halloween Trick-or-Treat hours for the City of Jackson, which will be 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31. Residents who wish to participate in Halloween trick-or-treating are encouraged to observe these hours. The City sets suggested Halloween hours every year in an effort to make sure everyone celebrates safely and there is more specific time for residents to participate.
  • Two presentations were given to the City Council. Jackson County Sheriff Gary Schuette gave an update on the County Jail Millage that will be voted on in the Nov. 8 Election. The Jackson Environmental Commission gave a presentation on proposed changes to Jackson’s trash collection system.

A recording of the meeting is available on this page.
