Engineering is responsible for the maintenance of all the city and county traffic signals. There are approximately 42 city and 20 county signals. The city also has 3 beacons, the county has 7, Concord has 1 and Hanover has 1. The signals are designed, constructed, and operated to allow for safe movement of vehicles and pedestrians through heavily traveled or hazardous locations. Most signals within the county have timing patterns that change throughout the day and on different days of the week to provide optimal traffic flow.
Signal Issues
Problems occasionally develop because of failure of the electronic components in the signals, power fluctuations, bulb burnouts, or damage. Common problems are for the red, green, or yellow light to be out, flashing signals, or signals to become stuck.
Reporting Traffic Signal Issues
Traffic signals can be reported in 1 of 2 ways, depending on the time of day:
- Call the Engineering Division Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at 517-788-4160
- Call the Police Department during nights or weekends at 517-788-4100
